The Great George Street shade trees

Past President Jenepher Baugh launched a project to plant shade trees along both sides of Great George Street. More than two decades on, they are still there, and still working.

Shade along both sides of the parish capital's main street

In 2002, Past President Jenepher Baugh launched a project to plant shade trees along both sides of Great George Street, the main thoroughfare of Savanna-la-Mar.

It is an unglamorous kind of project. No ribbon worth photographing, no cheque to hold up, and the result takes ten years to look like anything at all. Which is precisely why it is the club's best answer to the question of what Rotary is for. Every vendor working that street, every shopper walking it at midday, every child waiting on a bus there is standing in shade that a Rotary president planted before they were born.

The club regards it as one of the most impactful programmes it has ever developed.

This entry is deliberately short on numbers. If you know how many trees went in, which species were chosen, who supplied them, or who has maintained them since, the club would like to hear from you — those details belong in the record.
